Guess that's the whole point of a battle.

(There was a point where it was too much, but Dirk had never found that point on his own. Obliterate everything or run the risk of something that would come back with a vengeance.

Dirk maintains an even look when Savage accurately pins the droid thing down. It's true and there was no point in denying it. He gives a mild shrug.)
Emotions can make a situation unpredictable and inconvenient.

(Ironically, he actually felt emotions too deep, too sensitive, never having gained the actual emotional maturity of learning how to deal with them. They just got compressed and put through the grinder. He figured he was better off on his own for that very reason.)

I see. (War torn worlds and brothers being taken...Yeah, it's all familiar to him too. He does frown at the death of the guy's brother though.) That's unfortunate.

(He means it. He would fucking hate himself if he let his brother die, but the universe was a cold and merciless place. It did not care what failures you carried on your shoulders.

He should have seen that question. Did he know what happiness was? He tries to think of a moment. He had thought for the first few weeks he had been happy with Jake, but he was delusional and building the situation in his own head rather than paying attention to the obvious tells that Jake was forcing himself through the motions of playing the boyfriend role. It wasn't true happiness. If it had, things wouldn't have gone south so quickly.

So, he winds up answering curtly:)

No.

(He didn't even know what it felt like to be content. He frowns at the man, hands curling absently.)

I'm not helpless. (And because they were heading into that realm of discomfort, Dirk shifts his stance.)

Are we ready to see how far I can throw you or would you like to carry on with the sentimentalism?
